Dear Bev,
The following is my personal review of “The Sport”, a special model of HydroBikes made for hunting and fishing.
“The Sport”
Did you ever wish there were an easier, lighter way to drag a boat to that “secret” little lake that you can only get to by foot? HydroBikes, Inc., a company from Wyoming, Minnesota has come up with just what you are looking for in a model they call “The Sport”.
“The Sport” is a platform bolted onto two pontoons made from molded polyethylene. The platform is made of powder coated aluminum and provides a very sturdy place to stand or sit and cast for your favorite fish. Although it comes with oars that easily push “The Sport” wherever you want it to go, I opted to install a trolling motor on mine and use that for propulsion. The trolling motor pushed “The Sport” with incredible ease, and much to my delight, quite a bit of speed. It comes with a very comfortable swivel seat that is quite nice to fish from.
After first pushing off from shore, I was a little uncomfortable. I kind of had the same feeling I get in a canoe for the first time each year….(remember, I usually fish from a Ranger Bass boat). I had a full size trolling motor on the back, a full size trolling motor battery in the back, a tackle box that easily pushes 50 pounds, 4 fishing rods and myself (a svelte 215 lbs). Although the capacity is listed at 400 pounds, I was pushing the limit a little and because of that, “The Sport” lost a little of its stability.
After getting my sea legs, I set off away from shore and across the lake. Using just my trolling motor, I went about a mile from the landing before I started fishing. When I hooked my first bass, about a three pounder, my next concern was getting it onto the boat. Coming from the side would require me to hoist it above the pontoon, so I brought it in from the front where it easily slid onto the deck of my “Sport”. I hooked and landed about twelve fish in a couple of hours and headed back to the truck. When I returned to the landing, I made about four trips up to the truck with my stuff and then easily grabbed the “Sport” by the two handles and dragged it up to the trailer. I chose to leave my “Sport” intact, utilizing a flat bed trailer for hauling rather than tearing it down and putting it in my truck. It really does only take about five minutes to tear it down and it will fit inside a 2000 Chevy Tahoe, however it does require a little work to put it back together. It’s not hard, just bulky.
Overall, I found “The Sport” to be a perfect boat for this particular application. The price tag seems a little high, but if it stands the test of time, this fisherman will get his money out of it. If you have a small pond you like to fish or a body of water that you can really only get to by foot, you may want to consider a HydroBike “Sport”.
